Bed Styles for the Modern Home

One of the most interesting facets of contemporary bedroom design is that the typical modern bedroom so closely resembles a traditional Asian bedroom. An almost austere simplicity seems to be the guiding spirit, evidenced by neutral colors, minimal accessories, and low, flat beds with clean and uncomplicated lines.

Platform beds
The platform bed is the quintessential modern bed design. In particular, legless platform beds that eschew both head and foot boards capture the geometric purity for which modernism strives. This visual effect may be too uncomplicated for some, but the pure functionality of such a platform bed can be strikingly elegant.

Not all modern platform beds are so simple, but an ultra clean look lingers regardless of the design. For a variation on the typical modern platform bed, look for uniquely contemporary features such as separate dual headboards.

Poster beds
Incorporating a poster bed into a modern bedroom design can be tricky. If the posts are too ornate and imposing, it's going to look like you planted swizzle sticks in a rock garden. However, engraved posts can add a pleasing visual texture to a bedroom.

The one decorative advantage that contemporary poster beds have over platform beds is their abundance of lines. For a smoother visual effect, we recommend poster beds with crossbeams. Resist the temptation to add a canopy, unless you're a decorative genius.

Additional Modern Bed Styles
When decorating your bedroom in a contemporary style, it's best to stay away from sleigh beds. They're big and ostentatious and will overwhelm the room. Canopy beds also tend to be ornate and highly decorative and not in keeping with a modern bedroom style.

A platform bed should be the default choice when decorating a modern bedroom. Futons and daybeds can be acceptable as alternatives or secondary beds .
