Choice of Free Standing, Deck Mount, or Ground Insert Bases.
The Ground Insert Base goes 11 inches into the ground, has a 4 inch tube, and will show only a flat 5 x 5 inch disk when not in use. Installing this base requires a small hand shovel, ready mix concrete, 2 gallon mixing bucket, an 18-20 inch piece of 2 x 6, 2 4 inch clamps and a carpenters level. This item can only be used with an umbrella from this company.
Deck Mount Plates will work on wooden decks as well as concrete patios. Both will be 3/4 inches high and 9 inches in diameter. Installing on wood will require a drill with a 1/4 inch drill bit, lag screws, washers and a ratchet with 1/2 inch socket. Installing on concrete will require a hammer drill with a 1/2 inch concrete bit, 4 concrete spread anchors, 4 mounting bolts with washers, and a ratchet with 1/2 inch socket.
Due to the size and weight of the Salerno Giant Aluminum Sidepost Umbrella, we recommend using the zinc plated ground insert base to permanently mount this umbrella. This base is cemented into the ground and allows the inner umbrella support tube to be easily removed for the off season, while leaving only the top plate to be flush with the ground. The permanent base is designed for commercial applications and windy areas. A semi-permanent deck mount base is available for use on wooden decks, too.
If you want to be able to move the umbrella to a different location on your patio, the free standing base is a better option. The freestanding base requires 400 lbs. of stabilization which can be accomplished with eight 20" square patio blocks or by weighting the free planter kit included with this set (a $65 value!). See the "More Information" link below for complete information about quality base options available for the Salerno Umbrella.

The six ribbed aluminum frame is secured to the post with strong, high impact hubs that are designed to support this 10 X 13 foot rectangular canopy. The fabric of this canopy is crafted from 100% solution dyed acrylic Sunbrella fabric. That is an industry leading, extremely durable fabric that can withstand everything from heavy wind and rain to the harsh mid-day sun. This canopy is also treated with a fluorocarbon finish which enhances water repellency preventing the umbrella shade from molding or mildewing. The single wind vent located at the top of the umbrella is designed to facilitate airflow. Installation Instructions for Ground Insert base
Materials and Tools Required 1-2 bags of quick set ready mix concrete (please consult with your building supply store for exact quantity)
2 gallon mixing bucket
Small hand shovel or trowel
1 piece of 2 x 6, 18-20 inches long
2-4 inch C-clamps
Carpenter's level
Installation Procedure
1. Clamp the ground insert base with the flat top plate to the center of the 2 x 6
2. Determine exact location for the umbrella base. NOTE: to achieve a straight alignment of a rectangular umbrella canopy with a rectangular patio, insert the base at a 45 degree angle.
3. Once the proper location for the base has been established, prepare a hole approximately 12x12" square and 24" deep, and fill it with quick-set ready-mix concrete to about 1" below the surface level. Make sure to follow the mixing instructions carefully.
4. Push the ground sleeve into the mixture and agitate it with quick, short strokes so the concrete will bond to the metal. Lower the sleeve until the 2x6 rests on the ground surrounding the hole. This way it is assured that the top of the plate is flush with the ground once the concrete has set.
5. Take a water level to check if the top of the 2x6 is esactly level in all directions. If it is not, simply use shims or wedges to raise the board where necessary. Complete this step carefully, as the umbrella post might appear to "lean" if the base is not installed plumb.
6. Let the concrete set overnight. Remove the board and make sure not to knock the sleeve hard (concrete takes up to 7 days to cure). Cover the open screw holes on top of the base plate with masking tape.
VERY IMPORTANT: The umbrella rotation disk "O" allows for the number of fixed positions in a full 360-degree circle. If you need to position and lock the umbrella over an exact spot (e.g. the center of a table), make sure to orient the ground insert so it allows you to properly lock the umbrella in.
